morbidfunk:

The discussion over Derbyshire, fired from the National Review for article on avoiding black people: It seems to boil down to whether skin color is a useful, or meaningful, heuristic for concluding that fear is warranted in places or situations. To say, as the race realists do, that race is a useful tool (don’t go to a public event at which there will be a lot of blacks) is simply a way of saying that you can’t judge the other heuristics so easily. Even if they’re more effective: “Don’t go to an event where a lot of violent people will attend” is more useful, and not that much harder to judge. How much do you decrease your chances of being in danger by making the glib decision? Seems that needs to be answered, but he doesn’t. As someone who has spent innumerable evenings during the last two years attending basketball games in Queens and Bronx parks where my son and I were the only whites, I can say I am enriched by the experience. I think we took some risks, but demonstrably, the greatest one was driving there. The risk we took in being where we were, though, was in going to a neighborhood where incomes don’t allow people to insulate themselves quite so effectively from people who do violence. To say that equates to “black neighborhood” is, in my experience, not only wrong but naive, and leaves the potential for missing out on a huge amount: One, there’s good basketball there, with smart, focused, striving, tough kids for my son to match talents with, experiences I think that were key to his becoming the first basketball scholarship athlete from his Long Island high school in decades. And two, we learned a lot about our world, met a lot of cool people, saw a lot of compelling competition.
